World of Warcraft News: Network Analysis (continued)

Now that the launcher knows the web site IP address, it performs a normal HTML query and receives the news feed from the remote web server:

In our testing, the web page traffic transferred is a relatively small 54 kilobytes, including 39 images. This will obviously change as news and information is updated, but it's reasonable to assume that the size of the onscreen news display and the type of information displayed won't significantly alter the relative size of the transfer.

The transfer of data during the startup process is detailed in this chart. The HTML transfer is seen as spikes of data, showing the packets of data sent to the client and the smaller acknowledgements sent back to the web server.

Since this transfer was made over a relatively fast cable-modem Internet connection, the bandwidth used during this short period of time is well above one-hundred kilobits per second. Since this data transfer consists only of static HTML data and the total amount of data is relatively small, connectivity speeds aren't a critical aspect of the World of Warcraft news display process.
