Protecting Your Data: A Guide to Windows Firewall

CHAPTER 4: ADVANCED WINDOWS FIREWALL OPTIONS

The Advanced tab of Windows Firewall provides additional functionality that doesn.t fall into the category of General or Exceptions. These advanced features include the configuration of exceptions by network adapter, security logging, control over the ICMP protocol, and a method of restoring the Windows Firewall to factory defaults.

The Windows Firewall Advanced / Network Connection Settings
The Network Connection Settings in the Advanced tab provide a method of configuring port-based exceptions by network adapter. If Internet Connection Services are defined, these Network Connection Settings also allow network access to application services hosted on other locally networked computers.

For example, the diagram below shows a single workstation configured with Internet Connection Services (ICS). ICS allows a single workstation to provide a link between the Internet and all internal computers. When web traffic is received by the ICS computer, Windows Firewall can be configured to forward all web traffic to the appropriate internal web server.
