These utilities run from your Windows or Unix-based workstation to provide on-demand network visibility.


3D Traceroute 3D Traceroute

As its name describes, 3D Traceroute provides some great visual traceroute graphs. Unlike its name, 3D Traceroute also includes many other tools, such as a whois query, ping monitors, and my favorite, a day and night trace.

Conserver

Conserver is an application that allows multiple users to watch a serial console at the same time. It can log the data, allows users to take write-access of a console (one at a time), and has a variety of bells and whistles to accentuate that basic functionality.

Expect

Expect provides complete automation of applications such as telnet, ftp, passwd, fsck, rlogin, tip, etc. If you manage routers, switches, or other network devices, you need to check this out!

getif getif

Getif is a free multi-functional Windows GUI based Network Tool written by Philippe Simonet. It is amongst other things, an excellent SNMP tool that allows you to collect and graph information from SNMP devices. These devices include (but are by no means limited to) Windows 2000 (using the SNMP4NT or SNMP4W2K or SNMP-Informant extension agents, of course!), and other OS's as well as devices manufactured by most major network companies (i.e. Cisco, 3COM, Dlink, Nokia, etc.).

NBTScan

NBTscan is a program for scanning IP networks for NetBIOS name information. It sends NetBIOS status query to each address in supplied range and lists received information in human readable form. For each responded host it lists IP address, NetBIOS computer name, logged-in user name and MAC address.

PuTTY PuTTY

PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator.

Qcheck Qcheck

Qcheck is a free utility from Ixia that provides end-to-end performance information using a Windows-based console and a combination of Windows-based or Unix-based endpoints. Qcheck's anywhere-to-anywhere testing provides response time, throughput, streaming, and traceroute information. Email registration is required.

Sam Spade Sam Spade

Sam Spade for Windows is a freeware network query tool. Sam Spade will provide ping, DNS query, whois, traceroute, finger, IP block lookups, and other useful network functions!

TightVNC is a free remote control software package derived from the popular VNC software. With TightVNC, you can see the desktop of a remote machine and control it with your local mouse and keyboard, just like you would do it sitting in the front of that computer.

WinSCP WinSCP

WinSCP is an open source SFTP client for Windows. Its main function is the secure file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers basic file manager functionality. It uses Secure Shell (SSH) and supports, in addition to Secure FTP, legacy SCP protocol.
